Friday…

I get to go home. And play my guitar. And sing at the top of my voice. And go to Carver Music and jam with small children, cause it makes me feel cool. And jam with my boyfriend. And jam with my old band. And go see awsome bands.

Damn, I can’t wait to go home!!

Psycho Circus

So Wednesday’s show was awsome, I was blown away!

Psycho Circus was awsome! I thought of ICP when I heard the name, (clowns, ya know) but I was *thankfully* wrong! Especially for how young they were, very talented group. Great interaction with the crowd, singer always projected (first thing I look for now that I do sound). Went back and listened to the mp3s on their site and remembered the songs, good writing! They were a very “good quality” punk!

Sadly, I got a text from my roommate that my RA was threatening to write me up even though she knew I was running that show and I had to leave part way through their set, but they still stood out to me!!

Only critique was that they need a new drummer. He didn’t have too much rhythm…

Line Up Changes

Dream Theater recently announced that Mike Mangini is Portnoy’s replacement. This new kinda made my life. In the metal/ hard rock scene, Mangini has played with some of the best. Come on, he played with Extreme and Vai. How could you not like him?

Some people are still pissed that Portnoy left the band. Personally, I think Mangini’s gonna bring Dream Theater to a whole new level. I’m fuckin pumped \m/ \m/

Line up changes make a huge difference in the local scene too, good or bad. The Rice Cakes got Casey and they blew up, becoming more of a band rather than Roz’s solo act. Emma Ate the Lion’s changed drummers and guitarists and GOD they’re much better! T-6 unfortunately lost a couple fans after their guitarist and singer left the band, and that’s all I have to say on that….

Uninspired…

I apologize for the lack of posts but…

Rhode Island’s music ain’t inspirin me lately.

I was warned about this before I came here, but I didn’t believe it. In the South Shore scene, everyone knows and cares and supports each other. Local musicians became celebrities. Some were stopped in the mall to shake their hand for their latest performance. Sounds happy and cheesy, but it’s true. Even if the band sucked, you always knew someone who knew someone who knew someone in the band (or something like that) and you HAD to stick around to support them. That’s just how it is.

Now, the last show I went to had a mix of Mass and Rhode Island bands. Now the Mass bands stuck around for a few hours. One kid even stuck around with me for the full SIX HOURS. *most of the* Rhode Island bands show up late and intoxicated and left right after they asked a couple girls to come back with them *uncomfortable situations*.

For me, music isn’t just about the notes, the speed, the emotion, the lyrics, the talent. It’s about the environment, the atmosphere. I don’t like leaving a show with a sour taste in my mouth. When I go to a local show, I wanna leave after shaking a few hands, exchanging some good laughs, my ear drums throbbing with the sound of a crappy garage band grade hi hat, and just feeling good about the night. I miss that.

I’m going to shows this summer in Mass like its my job!

… Unless my job doesn’t pay enough…

Friday’s Show

So, Friday’s show with Brightest Lights and Emma was amazing! Everyone loved both of them, so thank you to them for making me look good! :P :P

And then the sound system went.

Well, it didn’t blow, but Mr. Electrical Engineer couldn’t figure out how to fix it. Hahahaha, Dan from Emma was giving me such a weird look when he couldn’t hear himself! We had a faulty input so I had to ground the system for a couple songs until we could switch them. It was pretty good… It was pretty good…..

About

As a biomedical engineer student, I don’t always get to sit down and enjoy one of my passions: music. I have been playing guitar for years and enjoying the stage for just as long. My main influences include Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Nuno Bettencourt, and John Petrucci. My favorite musicians vary from Lady Gaga to Cage the Elephant to Alanis Morissette to Red Hot Chili Peppers. I used to just listen to hard rock, but my views were changed one summer.
In April of 2008, I started working as a secretary at a music school and my eyes were opened to a whole new side of music where music emerges from the soul, not necessarily how fast or high you can play. My boss, and one of my guitar mentors, Kid Bangham, was the guitarist of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. He left the band and started this music school to spread his love of music by passing his knowledge onto the next generation.

I am not currently playing in my band, T-6, because they are 75 miles away. Now I am content with going to local shows and enjoying, or criticizing, other bands! When I did play with T-6, sit in with different groups, or opened for another band, I was lucky enough to walk into shows with larger audiences. A musician lives off of the crowd.
Many of the local shows that I have attended are not as lucky. Some of my favorite bands in the area have played for a crowd of me and five other people. With so much talent in this area, this isn’t fair.
This blog will review bands of different genres in the Providence and Boston area. Anyone looking for a good show or just something to do on a Friday night should know who they should go see and support (and who not to). Support your local music!
